For our daughter’s birth, I booked into a hospital 40 minutes away because they were the only ones with an MLU. Yes, it was quite an experience contracting 3 in 10 in the back of our little Alfa for all that time, but boy was it worth it!

For our son’s birth, I booked in at home as soon as we discovered we were pregnant, and were again met with gasps and disbelief – which made me determined to prove them wrong. I then began listening to the Natal CDs from about 12 weeks, and continued until the day before he was born. I had the added benefit of my mother-in-law giving me relaxation cues during labour, but Luca was not long later born into the most calm and peaceful environment is a lovely warm pool in our living room. The midwives later commented that they were unsure of my established labour complaints and were delighted to see me breathe my son out. This experience is something I’d love to share with the whole world (and I often do), never mind all of the sceptical friends, family, and neighbours who thought it’d never happen.

My one and only philosophy about pregnancy and birth is ensuring that the mum and her partner feel able and confident to make educated decisions. In that, I believe that my job is to offer all of the facts, maintain a neutral position, and support the mum and her partner in the decision they have made, regardless of my personal preferences.
